Tibetan prayer wheels (Mani Wheels) are used for meditation and spreading spiritual blessings for well being. Decorative prayer text is scribed onto the outer cylinder and a roll of thin paper imprinted with the mantra (prayer) is encased within. The scroll is often burnt slightly on the edges and is rolled around the axle inside the prayer wheel.
The mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum” is repeated over and over while twirling the prayer wheel with one hand using a rhythmic back and forth motion. Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying this mantra either out loud or silently will attract the kind blessings of Chenrezig – the spirit of compassion and health. It takes a little practice, but think of a hula hoop and the little weight on the cylinder will start engaging with centrifugal force and do most of the work for you. There are many types of prayer wheels, some are hand held, others sit on a desk while still others are huge and are attached to temples from floor to ceiling. These hand-made prayer wheels come from a Tibetan community in Nepal. We select them by hand to ensure quality and import them directly.
